Kerianne Senderak ’10 uses her marketing and communication skills in the community. After graduating from Ursuline with her English degree, Senderak went on to pursue her Master’s in Communications Management at John Carroll University. She started her career at the new Greater Cleveland Aquarium and most recently took a position as director of sales and marketing at Chagrin Falls’ Save Local Now.
How did you get into this profession?
After graduating from John Carroll University with my Master’s in Communications Management, I was offered the position of marketing and sales coordinator at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. While working for the Aquarium, I managed annual pass and group sales, copywriting and editing and all social media channels. The experience I had at the Aquarium is one that I will remember for the rest of my life. I worked with incredible people and found a new appreciation for marine and aquatic life. I also fell in love with jellyfish (did you know that jellyfish are made up of primarily water? 95% to be exact).
One of the things I am most proud of from the GCA is the writing voice I was able to develop through social media. The GCA’s Facebook page quickly grew to 25,000 plus “likes” and I enjoyed creatively engaging with the fans (it’s true what they say – aside from word-of-mouth, social media is the best free marketing tool available).
Just recently, I accepted a position as director of sales and marketing at a local Chagrin Falls company, Save Local Now. Save Local Now partners with local chambers of commerce around the country and offers exceptional benefits to their members, via one digital marketing platform. I am incredibly excited about this opportunity and look forward to my future here.
What did you learn at Ursuline that has helped you in your career?
I developed my voice at Ursuline College, in particular strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Dr. Celeste Wiggins, Ph.D. and Sr. Cynthia Glavac, OSU, Ph.D. encouraged me to become the very best person I could be. I learned what my values were; to never take advantage of opportunity and to cherish my education, friends and family.
What’s the best part of your job?
Only a month into the job, I can say that Save Local Now is a perfect fit for me. It’s a local business 10 minutes away from my home and filled with people who genuinely care about supporting the local community. I absolutely love it here.
Did you ever imagine that you would be doing this kind of work?
I knew as a kid that if I couldn’t be a professional singer, I would be in marketing. This profession allows me to be myself: Quirky, sarcastic, genuine, passionate and creative.
